Hey!! I’ve updated this Southern cabbage recipe!! Here is the revised version How to cook southern-style cabbage.
(No worries I’ve also left the original recipe intact below)
Cabbage is quickly becoming one of my favorite vegetable side dishes! Especially when it’s simmered in a flavorful broth like this recipe. If you’ve struggled with cooking cabbage in the past or hated the taste, then this is the recipe you want to make!
It creates one amazing pot of down-home, Southern-style cabbage that has been known to transform plenty of cabbage haters. Nothing fancy here, just some good ol’ cabbage that’s practically begging for a hunk of homemade cornbread!
How To Make the BEST Southern Cabbage
- Simmer, don’t boil- For this cabbage recipe, we’ll simmer it gently so that it cooks slow and low. This will result in tender, yet flavorful finished results! Simmering also cuts down on the smell a bit.
- Use chicken broth. Many Southern cabbage recipes rely on a little bit of water to cook the cabbage but chicken broth is the way to go for maximum flavor. You could also use vegetable broth.
- Add some spices. Onions and garlic are always a win with Southern cabbage but adding a few simple spices like seasoning salt, smoked salt, black pepper, onion powder or garlic powder can enhance the flavor even more.
- Don’t forget the butter! Butter adds such a nice flavor and finished texture to Southern cabbage.
Here is how I cook my basic cabbage. I love this southern cabbage recipe because it creates tender, yet slightly firm cabbage that is full of flavor, even the juice left in the pot tastes good!

I made this for my best friend’s family for dinner. They are Irish and Portuguese and have certain things they all hate so cooking for them is always a challenge. This cabbage came out deliciously!!! I had to use savoy cabbage instead of regular green, but it tasted the same! I grew up on green cabbage and they grew up on savoy. I made this the day before as suggested and it was AWESOME! It was easy, inexpensive and delicious! Thank you for giving me a new veggie to enjoy with my meals! Keep them coming! 🙂
Awesome, had some fried tilapia, rice and your cabbage my kids and I THANK YOU!!!! Have to share this. Banana pudding next.
I’m a seasoned “diva can cook”, and this recipe is a keeper. Thanks, Grandma for sharing! (and you too Monique 🙂
I made the cabbage again for St Paddy’s Day. This time I used your suggested tips and also used a lil vinegar for “smell control”; about a tablespoon. I don’t know if it helped with the smell, but it sure added to the flavor. I really liked it! Thanks for the tips! Be blessed!
Great and simple recipe. I tried this last night and it was good. I threw in some smoked beef sausage too as I always like to have some meat in my cabbage.
OMG…. Thank you sssoooooo much. I was looking for an easy recipe since My spouse requested cabbage with turkey wings and rice. The video was short and to the point, very easy to follow. I used perfect pinch “salt free” garlic and herb seasoning, and I must confess…. “I picked up that phone and bragged to my mama that she might have some competition” Lol. Great recipe, Thanks Diva 😉
