Old-Fashioned, Southern Recipes That Anyone Can Create!
Omg you actually came to this page! I’m so excited, welcome! I’m the slightly crazy, fun-sized chick that will be guiding you through all of the recipes on this site.
If you’re intimidated by cooking from scratch or perhaps you’re just looking for a few of those southern-style recipes you grew up on, you’re in the right place, honey!
How it all started…….
I started Divas Can Cook back in 2009. I noticed a shortage of authentic Southern recipes like the kind I grew up on. Authentic golden fried green tomatoes, hamburger steak and gravy, and forgotten tea cakes . I’m talking about that deep south, Elberton, GA cooking!
Sadly it seemed to be fading away or was hard to come by.
The fine folks who were actually sharing these types of recipes were much older than I and looked nothing like me. When I couldn’t find my relatable, young, brown diva cooking soulful, from-scratch recipes, I decided to become her!
This site started as my little “happy place hobby” to share all of my favorite family recipes with anyone who’d listen. Well, it turns out people were definitely listening! Before I knew it, I had a dadgum full-blown business creating and sharing tried and true recipes! Talk about a dream job!
Some stats and stuff…
Divas Can Cook was one of the first video food blogs and has been featured on many websites, tv shows and radio channels! It currently consists of over 600 self-produced video recipes and serves over 2 million website visitors every month. With over 125,000 newsletter members and over 800,000 youtube subscribers, Divas Can Cook proudly represents a voice in the underrepresented Southern cuisine world.
What to expect…
You won’t find a lot of fussiness on this site. I’m a simple girl (despite having diva in my name ha!) and believe that simplicity is what makes Southern cusine so special. In other words,”leave it be” as my grandma says. Southern food is traditional and made with loads of love and soul. That means no adding carrots to potato salad or trying to make fat-free baked macaroni and cheese! Although I’ll still love you if you do!
This site is chocked full of authentic Southern family recipes, recipes that I’ve developed, and tweaked to perfection and a few non-traditional ones sprinkled throughout for good luck. I hope that this site will not only build your kitchen confidence but become a trusted source for tried-and-true Southern recipes for you and your family!
But wait, who are you again?
Oh dang, my name is Monique by the way. You can call me Mo if you want to. I learned how to cook by attending the prestigious “Grandma Barb’s Culinary School of the South” aka my grandma’s kitchen!
Just about everything I know of cooking comes from her. Growing up, I spent many hours at her table learning mainly through osmosis as I compleOhted my homework. Now that I’m older I absorb every single thing my grandmother shows me. Taking notes and carefully preserving all of her recipes down to how many shakes of herbs and spices she uses.
You’ll find a lot of Grandma Barb’s recipes on this site because she LOVES (and has given me permission) to share them! (Not a common trait in older Southern women who normally likes to take their recipes to the grave) Her recipes are always a hit like her amazing cream cheese pound cake and Baked BBQ chicken!
Hmmm…about me, let’s see…
I grew up in a gorgeous Southern mountain town in North Carolina. Occassionally, you’ll see that Blue Ridge Mountain lifestyle creep into a few of these recipes, but I try to keep the mountain DIY side of me in check. It scares people sometimes. Homemade laundry detergent anyone? Ok, fine, how about elderberry syrup? Homemade soap? No? Ok, sorry.
I’m a Taurus chick in EVERY. SINGLE. FREAKIN.WAY. I fall in love with anyone that can teach me something new. Besides cooking and recipe developing, I adore all things feng shui, aromatherapy, and any kind of DIY projects.
I’m a homeschooling mama. I LOVE shopping and putting together cute outfits, yet I’m always in jeans and a T-shirt : ) I collect vintage cookbooks, love flavored coffee and obsessed with Autumn.
I also enjoy traveling to unique places, trying new restaurants, laughing until I cry with my girl squad, and hanging out with the hubs and my two silly sons. I’m a proud introvert, but I’m not shy at all! Dare me and I’ll probably do it!
Stick around, and you’ll be mastering my southern baked macaroni and cheese that Nate Berkus and Curtis Stone loved and whipping up my candied yams that Jessica Alba made on snap-chat, in no time!!!
Coming soon, I’ll even be showing you how to lighten up and veganize some of these classic Southern dishes like the healthy chicken fried steak I made with Dr. OZ!
