Southern Homemade Sweet Potato Pie

Yall…….I am sitting here typing up this post while eating a piece of this sweet potato pie and I am seriously wondering how the hell can a sweet potato taste this freakin good!

I’ve had a TON of homemade sweet potato pies and made plenty of recipes for them. This one is definitely giving those others a run for their money!

homemade sweet potato pie recipe

This sweet potato pie recipe starts with an easy homemade pie crust that is buttery & flaky. Its not bland tasting like most pie crusts.

Then comes those fresh sweet potatoes! Fresh sweet potatoes are a MUST if you want a true, authentic tasting southern sweet potato pie. The kind that makes you take a bite and then say “daaamn” Yall know what I’m talking about!

I hope that you enjoy this recipe just as much as I do!

Southern Homemade Sweet Potato Pie Recipe ~ So Easy, So Delicious!

Author:
Ingredients
  • The Crust (makes two pie crust)
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1¾ cups butter flavored shortening
  • 3 Tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup ice water
  • The Sweet Potato Filling
  • 2 cups sweet potatoes (2 medium sweet potatoes usually does it. I always have a bit extra left)
  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup evaporated milk
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoons ginger
  • 1 Tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Let’s Make The Crust!
  3. In a bowl add the flour and cut in the shortening, until it
  4. resembles bread crumbs.
  5. Stir in the sugar & the salt.
  6. Mix the egg up inside the ice cold water. Pour into the crust mixture and stir until combined.
  7. Turn the crust mixture out onto a floured surface and gather it into a large ball. You may need to kneed it lightly just to get all the dry crumbs to incorporate into a ball.
  8. Divide the ball into two pieces. (Store the other ball in the refrigerator and use it for another yummy pie in the future!) Step 6) Roll the dough out about ¼ inch thick and then place it into a deep dish pie pan. Press the crust into place with your hands.
  9. Refrigerate until ready to use. You can brush it with egg whites to get that shiny crust look if you’d like.
  10. Let’s Make the Sweet Potato Pie Filling!
  11. Place sweet potatoes in a large pot and fill with water just until it covers them. Bring to a boil and boil for 45 -50 minutes or until they are fork tender.
  12. When done, let cool and then remove the skin. It should peel off very easily.
  13. Place peeled sweet potatoes in a bowl and break it up with a fork.
  14. Use a mixer to mix the sweet potatoes until smooth and creamy.
  15. Add in butter and mix to combine.
  16. Add in sugars, milk, eggs, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla and flour. Beat until mixture is smooth. It may be a lil speckled, don’t worry it won’t be that way when it’s done.
  17. Pour into prepared pie crust and bake for 55-60 minutes. (don’t be alarmed if the pie puffs up while cooking. It will sink down)
  18. Let cool on the counter for about 30 minutes and then chill in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours to fully set.

  1. My husband had some sweet potatoes and ask me to make a pie with my new kitchen Aid mixer. He ate both of them. Once again you rock with these recipes.

  2. I’m making this again as I type. I had left over sweet potatoes. This recipe is on point. I don’t have the patience to make the crust from scratch so I buy the already made crust but used the recipe for the filling. It is devine!! This is my go to site.

  3. Hands down! The best sweet potato pie I’ve ever had and made!! It was a hit this thanksgiving. I ended up getting 3 pies out of this recipe. I use an extra potato. and had enough dough for 3 pies. EXCELENT Recipe…you never let me down Monique!!

  4. Just made this for Thanksgiving. Came out amazing. Love your site and videos. Living in Spain now and wanted something to eat that took me home. No one does Thanksgiving here, or has even had this before. My friends loved it. Thanks.

  5. Been looking for a good sweet potato pie recipe and I hit the jackpot right here. THIS WAS TOTALLY DELISH!

  6. I’ve always liked to bake and try things especially baking things from scratch. I’ve cooked sugar cookies, pancakes, etc from scratch but never a pie. So I found this recipe, thankfully, and it turned out so well. I could have made the crust a little thicker but all in all it was realllly good. The filling was delicious, better than a store bought! Thanks so much.

  7. I love this recipe me and my husband have made half of your recipes on here You are the best please don’t stop

  8. Making a Sweet Potato Pie has always been a challenge for me – I just couldn’t get a good flavor or consistency. But, I was determined to make one this year so I don’t have to ask my cousin to make one for me. I tried this recipe exactly as written and it was GREAT! It is not to sweet but not to bland either – it was just right to me. However, I preferred to bake the sweet potatoes (2lbs) instead of boiling them ( I read many different recipes and most suggested that). I used a store bought Pillbury deep dish pie she’ll instead of making the crust but had filling left over. Everyone loved the pie and my bf asked to take a slice home! THANK YOU so much for sharing this recipe.

  9. I tried this recipe and it was AMAZING!!!!! I love all of your recipes can’t wait for new recipes!!!

  10. I made this pie. First time and it was soo good. Will try again for thanksgiving.

  12. Can I put a lattice on these or will that interfere with the cook time or temp??

  13. Hello, I am 26 yrs old and I have three little ones 9mth old and a 4yr old and a 5yr old. I also have a fiance’ now and I think its time I learn how to cook instead of hoping for my mom to cook. She is getting older now and now its my turn to start the Thanksgiving Dinner. But guess what I can’t really cook. I can do the basics fried chicken and boxed side dishes. But Im ready to start getting down and dirty in that kitchen like my mother. My goal this year is to make my first real Thanksgiving Dinner for my FAMILY!! I finally found a website that can help me. Thank You Divas Can Cook!!

  14. I have 6 of these in my oven right now and they smell heavenly! A small tip, recipe calls for 2 sweet potatoes. I used 6 and multiplied the recipe by 3 but that made 8 pies. I mean, the more the merrier but be prepared if you use this method lol. I also made your dressing and Mac and cheese (with Gouda) today and they were all delish! Thanks girl, merry Christmas!

  15. I made this sweet potato pie recipe for Thanksgiving. It was the BOMB(dot)COM. I did not make the crust. (Lazy I now) But I did use a gram cracker crust. And it was amazing amazing amazing. 23. I Love you and hate you at the same time! haha! I have been cooking sweet potato pie for years and my pie was the bomb! But every year my husband would say, it’s good…then mention how great his grandma’s pies were. Now, I never tried to compete with a grandma but deep down I wanted to make a pie that would make him forget his grandma’s for just a second. Well, THIS IS IT!! I’m posting this today…on Thanksgiving as he’s raving about this being my best pie. He asked if I talked to his grandma for the recipe (she passed away 7 years ago). Funny thing, we used the same ingredients but your blend is the best. I love you for sharing this and I’m putting my lil’ ole recipe back in the box!

  24. I love this site..Such great and easy recipes…
This is the 1st year I will make the pies instead of buying them at my local bakery…So wanted to try this out before presenting it to the family..Well, I made 2. 1 I followed exact, 2. Let’s just say..I have been instructed by my husband and kids that this will now be a monthly requirement….Thank you for sharing this with us..looking forward to more delish recipes…

  26. This is the first time I ever made a sweet potato pie, and not to mention my own crust. It came out so good. I’ve had sweet potato pie before but nothing like this good tasting. Thank you for posting the recipe.

  27. I Love this website!!! I have NEVER made sweet potato pie before, but this Thanksgiving I will be making one. I am thankful that I found this website! *wink*

  28. Made 2 pies last night. They are delicious. Followed the recipe exactly. I was a little afraid of the ginger, as I have never used it before in other sweet potato pie recipes. Perfect compliment to the pie. I will be making more for Thanksgiving. Thanks Diva!!

  29. Hey Monique, I made this pie and it turned out great. My daughter (now 40 ys old) sat down to eat a slice and when I came back she had demolished the whole pie. Good thing I made more than 1. I also would like to know if you have a recipe for a rice pudding. Everytime I do make it, it comes out okay, but I know your’s would be great! Thanks for this site. I can’t believe I’m a cooking Diva at my age (62)!

  30. I absolutely love this recipe! It is so simple an my pies always taste great. Thank u so much for sharing!

  31. Do you not have to blind bake the crust before you bake it with the filling? Thanks!!!

  32. I followed this recipe step by step but i used condensed milk instead of evaporated, will that make a big difference?

  33. Girl……..im from the south to but I thought I could cook but sista u can burn,I’m lovin all ur recipes I’ve tried them all im ready for more updated recipes

  34. One question:can you use canned sweet potatoes, since I’m short on time, would it alter the taste at all?

  35. This was freaking sweet and delicious!!!!! My family loved it.. I’m so happy I made 4 of these… I only have like 2 slices left ( -.- ) Thank you soo much!

  36. Can I just leave it on the counter for an hour or two? I’m kinda in a hurry to serve it.

  37. i will be trying this soon

  38. I tried this recipe this past Tuesday. Banging! Loved it. I can’t wait to try more of your recipes.

  39. Ok, so I just raved about this recipe and my computer deleted it. lol. So, I’ll keep it shorter this time.
I made these pies for Thanksgiving and oh wow…it was like I’d bitten into a slice of Heaven! Before now only Grandma’s pies could make me sit down to feast on a pie all to myself. lol Despite the many recipes on your site I have definitely put your e-cookbook on my Must Haves list for Christmas just to support you in whatever you are doing Diva! This recipe was Perfect! My family really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing and helping other young divas like myself to cook! =)

  40. HI there! Just found your site while searching for the perfect red velvet recipe (which I will try and post feedback shortly); love the site. Anyway, this recipe looks almost identical to the one I currently use, except I don’t measure my cinnamon/nutmeg, I just add whatever looks like enough to me. The only other thing I do differently is I like to bake the sweet potatoes; I find that more of the flavor stays in the potato as opposed to ending up in the water if you boil them. Everything else is the same (as far as the filling goes). I’m going to try your crust, I’m sure its great! So I can vouch that this is the best sweet potato pie recipe that you will ever come across, hands down! It never lasts long in my house :) )

  41. Thank you for this recipe! I doubled and made four DEEEElish pies! I just had to taste test one before bringing the other three for a gathering. I am so glad I did, because now I have one all to myself! These pies get better the next day too, oooh add some whip cream and it is just sweet potato awesome-ness! Thank you! This recipe is fool proof!

  42. Ok I found your site yesterday was looking for a different spin on my pies tried yours absolutely great. Ty for sharing.

  43. LoVe this recipe! Thanx. GOD speed.

  44. 45. Hey Diva!! Its Thanksgiving Eve and my mother asked me to cook two sweet potato pies for dinner tomorrow! Im boiling my sweet potatoes as we speak! Im sure it will be Delicious!

  46. Thank you for this recipe, it was exactly what i was looking for.

  47. Your website has been a life saver. I got the kids looking on here to see what they wanna try and make (meaning me) for dinner. I am using this one today. I will give update tomorrow….. that’s if I (we) can hold out til then.

    Thanks Monique

  48. Made 4 of these the other night. DELICIOUS!!!! Tried to make a maple whipped cream to eat with it, but it didn’t get thick enough. Instead, I just used whipped light cream. My fiance and best friend said the pies were wonderful. Thanks for sharing and helping me to become a fantastic cook. Love this sight~

  49. I will definitely be trying this for Thanksgiving! One question.. does it matter what kind of butter you use?

  50. Just put m pie in the oven it was a bit thin but I think I put to much butter but oh well it tasted good in raw form.I added a pinch of lemon extract hope it comes out well its a taster before Thanksgiving anyway!

  51. This weekend I’m making sweet potato pies and just decided to compare your recipe with mine. This is my exact recipe. It’s funny because I live in AR (yes, as southern as they get) and my grandma taught me to make this pie when I was 14 (now 26).
You’re so right about it too. I make at least 6 each time I cook it. My husband gives them to his employees and brags about my cooking. LOL. I also make them for funerals and other family gatherings.

  52. Girl i been wanting a sweet potato pie for the longest!! thanks to you im making me one TODAY!!! Thanks!!!

  53. Monique,
I can’t wait to try this recipe. I love sweet pototo pie as well as pecan pie. I bakery that I usually get my pies from also makes a “sweet potato pecan pie”, combining the two pies. If I wanted to attempt to make that how would you suggest altering the ingredients so it won’t be too rich, sweet etc.? Can’t wait til the holidays.

Thanks. Getting thicker and being loved more.

  54. Baking the sweet potatoes makes it sweeter and easier to mash. I usually bake mine until they burst (about 1 1/2 hr depending on your oven…mine was 375). The skin comes right off and its so yummy. I also use sweet condensed milk versus both the sugars and it tastes yummy! Try it out Diva girl! Loves it and I love your blog!

  55. Hello!

The Sweet Potato Pie was a real hit in my house this weekend. My family loved it and asking for more. The recipe was easy to follow and turns out as described.

    Thank you!

  56. I must say I have used this recipe twice. Once for Thanksgiving again at Christmas and again tonight on New Year's Eve. My husband just can't get enough. I am not or should I say use to not be a big on cooking, but since finding your site my cooking has increased tremendously and everything is oh soo good. Had alot of critical cooks for Thanksgiving and they all loved everything (I used your recipes for everything I cooked). Great site and I had to share your site with my blog readers. Wonderful.

  57. This was DELICIOUS!!! I followed the recipe to the letter and these came out better than any other I've ever tried. I did use frozen pie crust- time was short :-) – but the filling more than made up for my shortcut. Thanks!!! Can't wait to try the rest of your recipes!!

  58. Can you make extra pies and then freeze them for later? Or would that alter the taste or texture? I have frozen sweet potatoe pies before after cooking them and when they unthaw they taste just as good as the first day, but never have I used a homemade crust before.

  59. I'm in the works of trying the pie filling receipe now as I type this… will let yall know how it turns out!!

  60. I tried this over the thanksgiving holiday and the recipe is simply delicious! Can't wait to test your other recipes out :)

  61. I found this recipe on a Google search and I'm sooooooo happy I did. I've always been afraid that I would mess up sweet potato pie and so I never even tried to make one. But the two pies I made were DESTROYED on Thanksgiving. I'm planning on making a couple more today!! Thank you so much!

  62. Thanks so much for sharing this girl! I made it for Thanksgiving and it was a BIG HIT. I really wished I had made 6 instead of 2, but to get a thumbs up and request for more from both my grandmother & best friend was the best part of all…it's their favorite. I will definitely refer you to others and most definitely be back for more.

  63. think=thing

  64. i made this pie today…and it was excellent..the only think i did differently was added a lil barcardi rum to it…and when i bake again i may add rum extract instead of vanilla..but this pie was good..my kids were licking the batter before i put it in the pie crust..I love this site..and i will be back again and again to try recipes..YES THIS DIVA CAN COOK!

  65. I can't wait to try this over the holidays. Thanks for sharing!

  66. can't wait for the cornbread dressing recipe. i'm definitely looking for a new good one for thanksgiving. and you are a SAINT for posting the girl scout caramel delite recipe!

  67. You all are very welcomed!

Annonymous I know what you mean about the crust, which is why I love this crust recipe. I use it for all my sweet pies. It can take a beating and still turn out good.

  68. I'm so tickled right now! I have been waiting for this one. I can never seem to get the crust right. Soooooo we'll see how this one turns out. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

  69. gurl! YES! looks delic! Thanks so much for sharing.
