When I posted my sea moss gel on Instagram and Facebook, you guys made it known loud and clear that you wanted the recipe! Grandma Barb called and said she was all out of her homemade sea moss gel, so perfect timing! Let’s make some sea moss gel, shall we!

It’s no secret that sea moss gel is becoming the new Superfood star! Wait, wasn’t it just yesterday that everybody was going crazy over coconut oil? Curiosity got the best of me a while back, and I had to jump in and see what this sea moss shenanigan was all about! One word for ya: LOVE!

Yep, I’m sold on the hype! I’m not sure if I’m reaping all of the benefits that sea moss gel is supposed to deliver, but it has my skin looking so supple and glowy. Honey, that’s ALL I need to become a believer.

What the heck is sea moss?

If you’ve heard of Dr. Sebi, chances are you’ve heard him mention sea moss nonstop. Well, it’s algae, and loaded with nutrients. Some folks refer to it as “vegan collagen.” I guess that’s why it has my skin looking so lovely, huh? When your sea moss arrives, it will be super dry and ready for washing. Sea moss comes in several colors. I’ve only tried golden, pink, and purple. The results are the same as all I’ve tried.

What is sea moss gel?

Sea moss can be easily consumed by turning it into a gel. Sea moss gel is simply water and sea moss blended up. FYI: You can also get sea moss in powdered or pill form.

What are the benefits of sea moss gel?

Sea moss gel contains 92 of the 102 essential amino acids needed by the human body. It promotes skin and hair health, fights off inflammation, and boosts the immune system. It’s anti-bacterial & anti-viral. We can all use that during this time, right? It also raises libido (you decide if that’s a good or bad thing), boosts energy, and replenishes vitamins and nutrients.  It also supports the thyroid.  You can read more about the benefits of sea moss here and here.

Where do you buy sea moss?

As you begin to research sea moss and where to purchase it, you’ll run into plenty of articles about real versus fake sea moss. Everyone claims to have “the best” sea moss!

You’ll read about sea moss being bleached with chemicals versus bleached by the sun, having too much color and not enough color, and so on.

It can be downright frustrating! Do your research on vendors. I got burned by purchasing sea moss from Amazon, so be careful. Not saying that all Amazon sellers are selling poor-quality sea moss, but do a bit of research.

Thankfully, I didn’t experience any ill side effects other than simply not getting the results I was used to.

I buy my sea moss from Etsy or a local shop.

How do you make sea moss gel?

Making sea moss gel is so easy and much cheaper than buying it already made.

All you need to do is soak the cleaned sea moss in spring water for 12-48 hours. Pour off the water and place the sea moss into a blender.

Add more fresh spring water and blend until smooth.

Next, pour into a jar with a lid and refrigerate. It will turn into a more gel-like texture as it sits. That’s it!! You now have fresh, powerhouse sea moss gel ready for consumption!


How to use sea moss gel

Once you have your sea moss gel, it’s time to experiment with how you like to take it!

Some people eat a spoonful straight up. For my kids, I mix it in cinnamon applesauce. I keep the sea moss texture just like applesauce (or a bit smoother) by not blending it too much, and they never know it’s in there.

For me, I like it in my whole smoothies. Every morning I toss a spoonful in my smoothie. You can also add sea moss gel to soups, desserts, oatmeal, spreads, etc. 

It also makes an AMAZING face & hair mask! Try it!! Spread a thin layer over your face, and let it dry. Rinse with cool water, pat your face dry and follow with a moisturizer. (I use Hemp oil mixed with watermelon seed oil as my moisturizer.)

How much sea moss gel should you take daily?

I take 1-2 tablespoons daily. (Check with your doctor if you are concerned about any allergies to sea moss)

What does sea moss smell like?

When your dried sea moss arrives, it will have a smell. The golden sea moss smells mineral/grassy. The darker purple and pink sea moss smell like puppy breathe to me LOL. I’ve noticed some batches are smellier than others. Thankfully most of the smell goes away after soaking.


What does sea moss gel taste like?

 Before I had sea moss gel, I read that it tasted like nothing. It’s true that the taste is very mild, which helps it blend in so seamlessly with food, but there is a very, very faint sea-like taste. It’s not a “fishy sea,” but kind of like minerals and ocean air.


How do you store dried sea moss?

How long will it last?

Sea moss gel will last about one month in the fridge (although you will read varying recommendations). I make mine in small batches monthly. You can freeze sea moss gel if you want to make a big batch and keep it fresh.

  • 20 grams Dried Sea Moss
  • Spring water, (for washing, soaking and mixing)


  • Rinse your sea moss thoroughly with spring water. Be sure to run your fingers through the sea moss to remove any trapped particles.
  • Place the sea moss in a bowl and cover with fresh spring water.
  • Cover and refrigerate for 12-48 hours.
  • Pour off the water and give the sea moss another rinsing with spring water.
  • Place the sea moss in a high-powered blender and add 3/4-1 cup of fresh spring water. *
  • Blend until desired texture is reached.
  • Place sea moss gel in an airtight, sterile container and refrigerator for up to 1-month.
  • Take 1 tablespoon per day. (Mix is smoothies, oatmeal, soups, applesauce, etc)



*A high-powered blender is a must to achieve a creamy texture. Otherwise it will be very grainy.
