My FAVORITE Passover Charoset
If you’ve never made, tasted or heard of charoset (pronounced kha-roe-set) then head to the store and get these simple ingredients. It’s traditionally served at Passover Seders (usually in a paste-like consistency) .
What’s in Passover Charoset?
Charoset is very simple to prepare! You’ll need apples (I like to use a variety,) walnuts, honey, spices, wine and brown sugar to make it sweeter if desired.
I’ve been the “charoset maker” for our family Passover Seders for over 15 years! (Ha! I never saw that one coming) This is my go-to recipe because everyone loves it. I have to keep making it during the entire unleavened bread holiday so that my boys can make “apple pie matzoh” as they call it! It can be quite addictive.
Can I make charoset ahead of time?
Absolutely! With so much Passover cooking going on, I always make the charoset the night before. That way, that’s one less thing I have to worry about. And it tastes even better as it sits!
How long can you keep charoset?
Leftover charoset will last for about 2-3 days stored in the fridge. Store in an airtight container.
What is the significance of Charoset?
Charoset represents the mortar that the Israelite’s used to bond bricks when they were kept as slaves in Egypt. If you are interested in reading more about the significance of charoset and why it’s even on the Seder plate check out this site.
This Passover charoset recipe is chocked full of sweet and tart apples, raw honey, crunchy walnuts, brown sugar, and warm spices of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. For Passover, I always add in some sweet Kosher red wine.
There is no need to wait until Passover or until your Jewish friends invite you to a Seder to enjoy this apple charoset, make it anytime you’d like! I like to serve this throughout the year with homemade cinnamon sugar tortilla chips! Yum!
