I’m obsessed with a new blog called I Heart Organizing.  Jen is the organizing diva that I dream to become. Just one scroll through her site and you’ll probably be filled with amazement, inspiration, creativity and  lil bit of “I so want my house to look like that” jealousy. She’s that amazing!

The gift of organizing is not one that I’m super good at. Well, actually I am pretty good at organizing just not good at keeping it that way.  Which is the whole point, right?  I waste a lot of time cleaning and reorganizing. *sigh*

Well there is at least one thing that I’ve been consistent with over the years (well..kinda) and that is a snack box for my son.  I love the way Jen has her snack boxes set up and she inspired me  to create one for pantry snacks and lunches as well.

The Snack Box

A snack box is a box kept in the refrigerator that is filled with serving-size snacks, ready to eat. Preferably healthy snacks in my house. I use snack-sized sandwich bags and small containers for dips & sauces.

The snack box is kept on the lower shelf of the refrigerator so that when you hear those words “Mommy can I have a snack!!!!” all you have to do is say “go get one out of the snack box”. It’s a beautiful thing really, especially if you have younger kids who can’t fix things for themselves.

Right now we use a washable baby supply basket we got from Walmart but I plan on having Isaac decorate his own snack box with his name and painted wood food cutouts when we talk about healthy eating in homeschool.

He LOVES this snack box so much. Every week I let him create a list of things he wants to include. It helps him feel independent and has actually made him more excited to eat and try more fruits and vegetables, simply because he can get it himself.

I refill and replace the snacks every Sunday. I probably wouldn’t have to do it that often if my husband and I would stop dipping in it. It’s just so darn convenient! Hmm…maybe I should make one for us.

Right now his snack box has:

  • Grapes
  • Broccoli, carrots, lettuce with Ranch dipping sauce
  • Dark chocolate covered prunes
  • Dark chocolate cookies
  • Apple straws
  • Granola bars
  • Graham cracker sticks  with apple sauce
  • Lil Vegetable Crunchies (baby snack but he still loves them)
  • Cereal Bars
  • Cheese sticks
  • Mini Bottled water
  • Fruitable drinks

Here are some other things that we like to include in our snack box.

  • homemade banana muffins
  • apple slices and peanut butter dip
  • peas
  • cheese crackers
  • mini fruit kabobs & yogurt dip
  • cereals
  • hummus and whole wheat tortilla
  • homemade trail mix
  • fun fruits
