Grandma’s Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Grandma’s Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich
There is something about a rainy day that makes me crave ooey-gooey, comforting grilled cheese sandwiches. It has been raining a lot here lately so today I decided to make up some of my grandma’s classic grilled cheese sandwiches!
Growing up I always preferred my grandma’s grilled cheese sandwich over my moms. Both were good, but there was just something special about grandmas that I couldn’t put my finger on. Turns out granny was using mayonnaise on the bread instead of butter! This produces a delicious, evenly browned, crisp bread with just the right amount of crunch. This recipe is so simple, but so worth having in your collection…ya know…for those rainy days.
Grandma’s Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Recipe Type: lunch
Author:
Ingredients
- 2 slices of white bread
- Mayonnaise for spreading (the real kind of Mayonnaise no subbing here!)
- A pat of butter (to grease the skillet)
- 1/3 cup or more of cheddar cheese (I always mix cheddar and mozzarella)
Instructions
- Melt a thin slice of butter on a skillet over medium heat.
- Spread a thin layer of Mayonnaise over a slice of bread and place mayonnaise side down on the skillet
- Sprinkle on cheese.
- Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the other slice of bread and place it on top of the cheese, mayonnaise side up.
- Grill for about 3 minutes or until bottom bread is golden brown and then FLIP to grill the other side, until golden brown and the cheese is completely melted. This side will only take a minute or so. Keep an eye on it!
- Place on a plate, cut and enjoy!!
- I always slice mine at a diagonal. It just doesn’t quite taste the same if I don’t.
I made this recipe…..this is the best grilled cheese ever!!!!!! This is how I’m making mine from now on.
OMGosh, I can’t believe that you said to spread mayo on the outside of the bread!!! I have been telling people that for years and they think I’m nuts!
You and I should talk girlie girl cuz we speak the same language.
I am 49, female, owned a restaurant for many years and am currently writing a cookbook for a women and children’s homeless shelter to be used for fundraising purposes.
That is how I stumbled upon you, doing research for that. I am totally impressed! You rock!
About the grilled cheese though, one day I had some super finely shredded cheddar cheese and I was making grilled cheese exactly like you said but I took some of the super fine shredded cheddar and stuck it to the outside of the bread on both sies and continued to cook it just like you say.
The outside of the sandwich came out super crispy cheesy heavanliness…please try sometime…to die for.
YESSS we really should talk! lol I like your style honey!!
I just tried this recipe. I’ve never added mayo to the bread on a grilled cheese sandwich but the taste is AMAZING (even on wheat bread)!! I will continue to do this b/c it’s delicious! 🙂
Delicious, I will do my best to understand how to prepared it. Anyway, thanks for the information on this blog! I find it very interesting and entertaining! hopefully soon have updates
What does the mayonnaise do? I've never heard of putting mayo on a grilled cheese sandwich. Will the mayo taste the same if I use wheat bread?
“Mayo is basically another type of oil”, they actually just said this on food network!
