Homemade French Onion Dip
Serves: 2½ cups
  • 1 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1½ cups onions, finely diced
  • ¼ cup beef broth
  • 1 cup sour cream, can add more if desire (good quality with fewest ingredients)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise ( I use Dukes)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder ( I used toasted onion powder)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder ( I used roasted garlic powder)
  • 1 teaspoon parsley
  • ⅛ teaspoon celery seed
  • pinch of sugar
  • salt & pepper
  1. In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add onions and cook until semi-translucent (reduce heat if needed to prevent burning)
  3. Add beef broth and continue cooking until onions absorb the broth and they are tender and caramelized.
  4. Remove from heat and let onions cool.
  5. Meanwhile, mix together sour cream, cream cheese and mayonnaise until smooth and creamy.
  6. Stir in cooled onions.
  7. Add remaining spices.
  8. Taste mixture and adjust spices to your liking. Remember though, flavor will intensify greatly as it sits so be careful not to over season.
  9. Add a few pinches of salt and pepper, to your liking, being sure to after each addition.
  10. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight.
  11. When ready to serve, stir and garnish with chives and parsely
  12. Serve with chips or vegetables.
Be sure cream cheese is room temperature and soft or the dip will have small bits of cream cheese lumps in it.
Add a bit for sour cream if you prefer a thinner texture.
