Hey!! I’ve updated this Southern cabbage recipe!! Here is the revised version How to cook southern-style cabbage.
(No worries I’ve also left the original recipe intact below)
Cabbage is quickly becoming one of my favorite vegetable side dishes! Especially when it’s simmered in a flavorful broth like this recipe. If you’ve struggled with cooking cabbage in the past or hated the taste, then this is the recipe you want to make!
It creates one amazing pot of down-home, Southern-style cabbage that has been known to transform plenty of cabbage haters. Nothing fancy here, just some good ol’ cabbage that’s practically begging for a hunk of homemade cornbread!
How To Make the BEST Southern Cabbage
- Simmer, don’t boil- For this cabbage recipe, we’ll simmer it gently so that it cooks slow and low. This will result in tender, yet flavorful finished results! Simmering also cuts down on the smell a bit.
- Use chicken broth. Many Southern cabbage recipes rely on a little bit of water to cook the cabbage but chicken broth is the way to go for maximum flavor. You could also use vegetable broth.
- Add some spices. Onions and garlic are always a win with Southern cabbage but adding a few simple spices like seasoning salt, smoked salt, black pepper, onion powder or garlic powder can enhance the flavor even more.
- Don’t forget the butter! Butter adds such a nice flavor and finished texture to Southern cabbage.
Here is how I cook my basic cabbage. I love this southern cabbage recipe because it creates tender, yet slightly firm cabbage that is full of flavor, even the juice left in the pot tastes good!

I have been looking for an easy but tasty way to fix cabbage for years! I tried this recipe today and I love it! I had no idea I could cook cabbage so easily, but have it taste so good. I will be buying and cooking cabbage a lot from now on. Thank you for your recipes!
I added more bacon 🙂
Just cooked this today. Was very good. Have made about 5 of your recipes and all have been a success!!!
I LOVED using this recipe for my traditional new year’s day cabbage! My family always used just water but the chicken broth makes it really good. I cut up and fried five pieces of bacon, poured it in the pot with drippings, added the olive oil, butter, salt, pepper, one can chicken broth, and Tony’s instead of season salt. Then I let it come to a boil before adding the cut up cabbage. I like mine really soft, so I do double (sometimes triple) the simmer time, but you can do no wrong with this recipe…longer or shorter it’s good no matter what!
I am 51 years old and have not eaten cabbage cooked like this since I was a little girl when my mom fixed it quite often. So this is also the first time I have ever cooked cabbage! This recipe is AMAZING! Cabbage will be on my grocery list all the time now. Not time I will add the things you suggested and some smoked sausage. Thank you so much for sharing!
Your next recipe I am trying is your creamy, crunchy and perfectly seasoned coleslaw. Can’t wait!
This recipe is very easy and delicious! I used the broth from the smoked turkey wings and ground garlic pepper, garlic, sautéed onions, and crushed red pepper! Awesome awesome awesome!!!
